Bed Bugs
Bed bugs have experienced a resurgence in the last couple of decades after being almost completely eliminated from the United States in the mid-20th century. Bed bug infestations can make your home feel like a nightmare, and they are unfortunately very difficult to detect until the infestation becomes a serious problem.
Bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped bugs that are brown or brownish red and about the size of an apple seed. They’re most commonly found in bed linens, mattresses, headboards, or in furniture or fixtures adjacent to your bed – hence the name bed bugs. You may also find them hiding in cracks in your baseboards or walls. Infestations most often start after you unknowingly bring bed bugs into your home through your luggage after traveling. They’re very accomplished hitchhikers, and you might not even know you had stowaway bed bugs until you find yourself dealing with an infestation weeks later.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation:
- Itchy, red bites appear on your skin in a straight line or zig-zag pattern, often after a night’s sleep.
- Your pajamas, mattress, or bed linens have small fecal stains or blood spots.
- You see a presence of flat, oval-shaped bugs that are brown or brownish red in color.
Bed Bug Prevention Tips:
- When traveling, carefully check hotel reviews for any mention of bed bugs.
- Upon arrival, thoroughly inspect the hotel bed linens, mattress, headboard, and bed frame for any signs of bed bugs.
- Don’t keep your luggage on the ground or on the bed. Put it on a luggage rack instead.
- Avoid storing any clothes or belongings in the hotel dresser or bedside tables.
- At home, wash your bedding regularly.
- If anything can’t be machine washed, put it straight in the dryer for 20-30 minutes on the highest heat to kill bed bugs and their eggs.
